New Year message

January 1, 2016

It is the Year of Mercy. This will be a special challenge to us in our life and work. Jesus wants us to be as he is. He washes the feet of his disciples; we are to do the same. He forgives us our sins; we are to forgive others as well. He loves unilaterally and unconditionally; so too are we expected to do. He is rich in mercy; that is what is to characterize us as well.

God’s sending His own Son into the world was an act of great mercy. Jesus’ winning for us our salvation on the cross was undeserved mercy for us. We were dead in sin, but God brought us life, even as we continue to transgress God’s ways. Oh, the inscrutable mercy of our God!

There is more. God intends for us to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Thus He prepares us on earth by granting us the grace to grow in holiness and Christian perfection. We are to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect (Mt 5:48); we are to be merciful as our Father is merciful (Lk 6:36). To be perfect is to be merciful; to be merciful is to be perfect.

We need to learn mercy, and then we need to help teach the world. It starts with the proclamation of the gospel. We share Christ so that people would meet and know Christ, and thenceforth start to live Christ. This is a life of love, holiness, perfection, mercy. It is a life empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is a life that can help change the world.

My brethren in LCSC, I thank you for all the work and witness you did last year. Regardless of how our mission moved forward, in your parish or other situations, the first and foremost beneficiary is you yourself. Have you lived your life for God? Then, whatever the circumstance in your life, you have been blessed.

We want to share such blessing. With many others. To the ends of the earth. Let us continue the work of the New Evangelizaton.

May our loving and merciful God continue to keep you secure in His care, and use you as His special instrument this new year, and beyond.

Happy New Year! God bless you all.

Your brother and co-worker,
“For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.” (Phil 1:21)
