mercy and evangelization

Christmas Day
December 25, 2015
Today’s readings:  Isaiah 52:7-10;  Psalm 98:1-6
Christmas is about the mercy of God, in that God sent us His own Son to be our Savior. Mercy in turn is about evangelization, in that this good news of salvation in Jesus needs to be proclaimed to all.
God raised a people and entered into covenant with them. These were the Israelites. They turned away from Him and suffered the consequences. God first sent His prophets. Now He has sent the ultimate prophet, His own Son. “He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness toward the house of Israel.” (Ps 98:3a).
How can we, the new Israel, experience the mercy and salvation of God? We must turn back to Him, with repentance and putting our faith in Jesus as Savior, Lord and King. How does this happen? When the gospel is proclaimed, and by the grace of God people are led to believe. Now God has entrusted the proclamation of the gospel to His people, and so this work is of critical importance, and those who do this work are to be highly esteemed. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the one bringing good news, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, saying to Zion, ‘Your God is King!’” (Is 52:7).
Let us announce this good news, not only that today a Savior is born, but that Jesus has accomplished his purpose in coming into the world. Let us proclaim the gospel to all the nations, so that “all the ends of the earth can see the salvation of our God.” (Is 52:10b). Let us then experience the salvation that brings victory to our lives–victory over sin, Satan, darkness and evil. “All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.” (Ps 98:3b).
Christmas is a time of celebration and joy. A Savior is born! May the time come, through our work of massive evangelization, when all the earth will join us in praise of our Savior. “Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth; break into song; sing praise.” (Ps 98:4).
