Today’s reading: 1 Corinthians 7:25-31
“For the world in its present form is passing away.” (v.31b). We are living in the end times, and “I tell you, brothers, the time is running out.” (v.29a). But Christians are still investing themselves in the world. They are getting married, raising families, acquiring goods, going up the corporate ladder, expanding their experience of what the world has to offer. These are not necessarily bad, but investing in them to the exclusion of spiritual matters deprive us of the greater investment we can make–that of meriting and serving the Kingdom.
There should be the proper balance. We have spouses but do not expend our total focus exclusively on them. “From now on, let those having wives act as not having them” (v.29b). This would be applicable also to children and grandchildren.
We still acquire goods (which are needed for ongoing life) but are not invested in them. Thus, “those buying as not owning” (v.30c). We are mere stewards, making use of God’s blessings, but ready to let go.
We go with the ups and downs of life, not allowing these to disturb or distort our focus on God and His work. Thus, “those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing” (v.30a-b). We are not held down by sorrows or defeats, but we also do not just rest on joys and victories.
Finally, we are in the world but not of it. We use the world and whatever good it offers, which comes from God, but we are not invested in or dependent on the world. Thus, “those using the world as not using it fully” (v.31a). Our whole lives, while in the world, revolves around God and His work (which includes family and livelihood and recreation), and our true focus is on the world that is to come.
So what is important aside from everything else we do? It is responding fully to the call to the New Evangelization. Do it now. The time is short.

God bless you.
