SITTING FACING THE TOMB

April 19, 2014

Holy Saturday

Jesus has died and been buried, with a huge stone rolled across the entrance to the tomb. “But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb.” (Mt 27:61).

Today we face the tomb of Jesus. And we reflect on his great love for us. Jesus gave up everything so that we could live. We should then live and also give up everything for him.

Jesus gave his life to atone for our sins. We should then avoid sin and wrongdoing, so that we do not continue to crucify him.

Unlike the two Marys, we know Jesus will be raised. In the face then of great disappointments, seeming hopelessness, intense suffering and pain in life, we should never lose hope, and always look forward to the Lord’s victory in our lives.

Let us silently sit by and face the tomb of Jesus, reflecting on the great mystery of his love, manifested in his death and coming resurrection. Sorrowful but rejoicing. Perplexed, but not driven to despair. And know that we are “always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.” (2 Cor 4:10).

God bless you.
