Today’s gospel: Luke 10:13-16
How important is the work of evangelization? What really is involved in this work? It is of crucial importance, because it is about our eternal destiny, whether it be heaven or hell. Jesus told Capernaum about their opposite ends. “Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.” (v.15).
What determines our eternal fate? When the gospel is proclaimed, given how many live their lives apart from God, our response is to repent and humble ourselves. Like Tyre and Sidon, we should “long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.” (v.13c). If not, then Jesus says, “Woe to you” (v.13a).
So one’s eternal fate depends on one’s response. But the possibility of response depends on hearing the gospel proclaimed. Thus the work of evangelizers is of utmost importance. Evangelizers do divine work. They stand in the place of Jesus. They speak the words of Jesus. “Whoever listens to you listens to me.” (v.16a).
Do you realize how amazing this is? We grow in holiness and become another Christ. What a great privilege! We must take this responsibility seriously and give it our all. Jesus deals with the world through his commissioned evangelizers. “Whoever rejects you rejects me.” (v.16b).
On the other hand, those we evangelize hopefully will open their minds and hearts, and experience conversion and transformation. If not, there will be tragic consequences. “And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” (v.16c). When one rejects God, then sure condemnation follows.
So go and share Christ!
